This small to medium-sized tree, native to East Africa, typically grows to about 5 metres, though it can reach up to 25 metres in coastal forests. It is admired for its glossy, compound foliage and an attractive rounded canopy. Fragrant green-red to orange flowers bloom in dense clusters, followed by distinctive three-lobed fruits. These fruits split open to reveal a vivid red interior, showcasing three velvety, blue-black seeds, which are often used in artisan jewellery.

Ideal as an ornamental or shade tree in Kilifi-coast gardens and landscapes, thriving in full sun and well-drained, rich soil, including areas with coral.
