The nursery sits inside a larger Green Heart Kilifi project — three residential neighbourhoods and a cluster of restaurants, boutiques and workshops, woven through more than 100 acres of indigenous coastal forest.

Why a working forest

A nursery is only as good as the ecosystem it draws from.

The forest around the nursery is where we study, propagate and reintroduce native species — the same trees you see in the catalogue. It's a seed bank, a classroom, and a direct contribution to restoring East African coastal ecology one hectare at a time.

We graft what we learn here straight into the plants we sell and the gardens we plant for clients across Kilifi.

The trails

Five stops, forest to creek.

The trail network weaves through the project's cultural heart and three residential neighbourhoods before descending to the mangroves. Half a day end to end, or step out for a morning run.

    The Food Movement

    A cluster of restaurants, boutiques and workshops set in the forest — the cultural and commercial heart of the project, and the natural starting point for a trail walk.

  2. 2

    Green Heart Village

    A residential neighbourhood along the trail. Like most of the project, it sits on recaptured sisal plantation that's now part of the regenerating Green Corridor.

    Tuli Gardens

    Our newest neighbourhood, also reclaimed from former sisal land. The trail continues through as the corridor fills back in.

  4. 4

    The Sanctuary

    Green Heart's first residential neighbourhood. Built on recaptured sisal plantation; the indigenous canopy has been replanted around the houses over years of restoration.

    Takaungu Creek

    The trail descends through coastal forest into the mangroves and tidal flats of Takaungu Creek — one of the last largely-intact coastal estuaries on this stretch of the Kenyan coast.

Trail's end

Where the forest meets the sea.

The mangroves of Takaungu Creek — quiet, tidal, ancient — close the trail and open out toward the coast.
