About

This small to medium-sized tree, native to East Africa, typically grows to about 5 metres, though it can reach up to 25 metres in coastal forests. It is admired for its glossy, compound foliage and an attractive rounded canopy. Fragrant green-red to orange flowers bloom in dense clusters, followed by distinctive three-lobed fruits. These fruits split open to reveal a vivid red interior, showcasing three velvety, blue-black seeds, which are often used in artisan jewellery.

Where it works in Kilifi

Ideal as an ornamental or shade tree in Kilifi-coast gardens and landscapes, thriving in full sun and well-drained, rich soil, including areas with coral. Its natural habitat in coastal East Africa makes it well-suited for the local climate. Plant as a specimen or for dappled shade, ensuring adequate space for its developing canopy.

Growing notes

A moderate grower, this tree prefers moderate water but becomes fairly drought-tolerant once established. It is hardy in frost-free tropical climates, making it suitable for the Kilifi region. Propagate from seeds, which benefit from a 24-hour hot water soak, or from cuttings.
