About

A massive long-lived fig tree of African riverbanks and savannahs, with sprawling buttress roots and figs borne directly on the trunk. A keystone for fruit-eating birds, monkeys, and bats.

Where it works in Kilifi

Riparian or moister coastal positions. Needs space — a mature specimen has a vast canopy and root spread. Avoid planting near foundations.

Growing notes

Fast-growing where water is available. Tolerates seasonal flooding. Long-lived. Provides exceptional shade and habitat value once mature.
