About
A large semi-deciduous tree, growing up to 35 metres tall with a dense, spreading crown. It features distinctive green-yellow to orange bark that exfoliates in papery strips, becoming pale brown and fissured with age. The heart-shaped to oval leaves are rough to the touch, and edible figs are produced in dense clusters directly on the trunk and main branches, ripening from buff-green to yellow-red.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun and prefers fertile, well-drained loam or sandy soils, often found in riverine areas with high groundwater. Due to its extensive and invasive root system, it is best suited as a specimen or shade tree in large open landscapes or for restoration along waterways, well away from buildings and infrastructure.
Growing notes
Ficus sycomorus is a fairly fast-growing tree that requires moderate to substantial water, especially when young, though it becomes drought-tolerant once established. It is sensitive to frost and thrives in warm, tropical to subtropical climates. Propagation is readily achieved from cuttings.
