This small to large evergreen tree can reach up to 50 metres in height, often developing buttresses in older specimens. It is characterised by stiff, leathery, oblong-elliptic leaves, dull dark-green above with prominent yellowish veins. The spherical, green fruits, 15-20 mm in diameter, are typically crowned with a distinct nipple-like ostiole. This species often begins life as a hemi-epiphytic strangler and is valued for its fibre, amenity, and shade.
