This unarmed tree typically grows 5-18 metres tall, with smooth, grey bark and a fluted bole. Its light green, compound leaves usually feature 5-7 pointed leaflets with finely toothed edges, emitting a resinous scent when crushed. Small green-yellow flowers develop into flattened, rounded, yellowish-brown fruits, about 1.5 cm, each containing 2-3 dark seeds and maturing from June to October.

A drought-resistant tree ideal for Kilifi coast gardens, as it establishes easily and grows quickly in the region. It thrives in well-drained sandy or clay soils, tolerating medium to maximum sun exposure, making it suitable as a specimen, shade tree, or quick-growing hedge.

This species is fairly fast-growing and drought-resistant once established, requiring some to moderate water. Propagation is primarily by large cuttings, as seed regeneration is slow and low.
