This unarmed tree typically grows 5-18 metres tall, with smooth, grey bark and a fluted bole. Its light green, compound leaves usually feature 5-7 pointed leaflets with finely toothed edges, emitting a resinous scent when crushed. Small green-yellow flowers develop into flattened, rounded, yellowish-brown fruits, about 1.5 cm, each containing 2-3 dark seeds and maturing from June to October.

A drought-resistant tree ideal for Kilifi coast gardens, as it establishes easily and grows quickly in the region. It thrives in well-drained sandy or clay soils, tolerating medium to maximum sun exposure, making it suitable as a specimen, shade tree, or quick-growing hedge.

Growing notes

This species is fairly fast-growing and drought-resistant once established, requiring some to moderate water. Propagation is primarily by large cuttings, as seed regeneration is slow and low. Though becoming rare in the wild due to overexploitation, it is easily cultivated in gardens and around homesteads.
