About
This dwarf eelgrass is an aquatic herb with creeping roots and narrow, flat leaves that have rounded tips, typically 10-30 cm long and 1 mm wide. It grows along the African coast in the intertidal zone of permanently open estuaries, where it binds sediment and provides habitat and food for diverse marine life. The species also possesses antimicrobial properties.
Where it works in Kilifi
As an estuarine species, Cape Eelgrass thrives in shallow, calm coastal waters, preferring mud flats, channel edges, or sandy substrates. It is found in Kenya and requires full, natural sunlight underwater, typically needing 6-10 hours of daylight. It plays a crucial role in stabilising sediments in these marine environments.
Growing notes
This perennial seagrass has a challenging care regimen, growing fast but being a slow coloniser. It requires clear, high-quality, saline water and consistent monitoring of salinity levels for optimal growth. Pruning in early spring encourages growth and prevents overcrowding, while removing damaged foliage improves water flow and light penetration.
