About

Ziziphus pubescens is an unarmed shrub or small tree, capable of reaching up to 20 metres in height. It features narrowly ovate leaves that are hairy on both surfaces, displaying three prominent veins from an asymmetrical base and finely toothed margins. Small, yellowish flowers occur in dense axillary clusters, eventually developing into ovoid, reddish-brown fruits approximately 1 cm long when ripe.

Where it works in Kilifi

This species is well-suited for coastal and riverine environments in Kilifi, thriving in coastal forests, sand forests, and along riverine fringes. It requires higher moisture levels and is adapted to lower altitudes, making it ideal for restoration projects in such habitats or as a medium-sized shade tree.

Growing notes

Propagation is possible from seeds, seedlings, or wildings; seeds can be pre-treated by soaking in cold water. Once established, this tree requires consistent moisture to flourish. Its fruits are edible, and its leaves provide fodder for livestock.
