About
This herbaceous climber or trailer typically grows 3–6 metres long and is identifiable by its solitary female flowers and fruits. Its leaves bear 1–23 prominent dark green glands at the apex, and the inner surface of its receptacle tube is entirely hairy. The globose to sub-globose fruits are pitted, ripen to a red colour, and measure 10–12 × 6–10 mm.
Where it works in Kilifi
Native to the fragmented lowland coastal forests of Kenya, including areas within Kilifi County, this species naturally trails over rocks and climbs tree trunks. It is well-suited for restoration initiatives or as an ornamental climber on trellises, fences, or other garden structures, thriving in conditions ranging from partial shade to full sun in well-drained soil.
Growing notes
This species exhibits its flowering and fruiting periods from August to December.
