This tropical herbaceous perennial is known for its striking, glossy, dark green pinnately compound leaves, which emerge from thick, succulent stems. It grows from a large, potato-like underground rhizome, allowing it to store water and endure dry periods. Mature plants may produce a small, cream-coloured spadix flower, often hidden at the base of the leaves.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden in partial to full shade, or as a potted specimen in bright, indirect light. It thrives in well-draining, sandy, or highly organic soil. Allow space for its slow growth to 60-90 cm in height and width.
Growing notes
The ZZ plant is slow-growing and highly drought-tolerant; water thoroughly but allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. It is hardy in USDA Zones 9-11, tolerating temperatures between 15-29°C. All parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so handle with care.
