About
Xylopia keniensis is a tree or shrub, typically growing between 2.5 and 9 metres tall. Native to the Shimba Hills in Kenya, it thrives in wet tropical biomes. This species, formally described in 2017, is narrowly distributed and distinguishable from the similar Xylopia parviflora.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this tree performs best in full sun, requiring at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Plant it in well-drained, loamy soil rich in organic matter, with a pH ranging from slightly acidic to neutral (6.0-7.5). It can serve as an excellent specimen tree or provide valuable shade.
Growing notes
Xylopia keniensis is suited for hot, humid tropical climates, being intolerant to frost. While established plants are drought-tolerant, consistent watering is crucial during the growing season. The genus generally exhibits rapid growth in its initial years.
