About
This small to medium-sized evergreen tree, growing up to 20m tall, is notable for its buttressed trunk and ribbon-like surface roots. Its bark is smooth, yellowish to brown, flaking in irregular patches. The tree produces large, spherical, woody fruits, 9-25 cm in diameter, resembling cannonballs, which split open to release irregularly shaped seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal gardens or landscape restoration in Kilifi, particularly in brackish or tidal areas, as it thrives in consistently wet or waterlogged, loamy soil. It is a moderate light demander, tolerating some shade when young, and can be used as a specimen or for shade in suitable mangrove-edge environments.
Growing notes
This species exhibits a moderate growth rate, with seedlings reaching 50 cm in three months. It requires consistently wet soil and regular watering, as a decrease in freshwater supply during dry seasons can lead to high mortality. While it tolerates a salinity of 0.1-3%, it is susceptible to Hypsipyla shoot borers.
