About
This sparsely branched shrub or small tree typically grows up to 6 metres tall, featuring an untidy crown and spine-tipped branchlets. Ximenia caffra var. natalensis is distinguished by its entirely hairless leaves and branches, even when young. It produces small, sweet-scented creamy-green flowers followed by edible oval drupes that ripen to an orange-red colour.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun and prefers well-drained sandy or loamy soils, making it suitable for Kilifi's coastal and lowland dry woodlands. It can be used as an ornamental, a live fence, or as part of a bush clump to attract birds and butterflies.
Growing notes
Growth is moderate, up to 0.5 metres per year. Once established, it is highly drought-resistant, though it benefits from occasional deep watering during dry periods. This plant is hemiparasitic, growing stronger when its roots connect with those of other plants.
