About
This versatile species grows as a shrub or small tree, reaching up to 12 metres tall, with shiny, dark-green leaves that emit a pungent odour when crushed. It produces profuse clusters of fragrant white to pinkish bell-shaped flowers with prominent stamens, blooming from December to June. These are followed by small, round berries that mature to a pale yellow colour.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal gardens, this species thrives in full sun to semi-shade and exhibits high tolerance to salt spray and sandy soils. It can be planted as an ornamental specimen, a hedge, or for coastal restoration, attracting butterflies and birds.
Growing notes
A fast-growing, semi-deciduous plant, it can flower within a year from new growth and is hardy and drought-tolerant once established. It prefers well-drained, fertile soil and can be easily propagated from seeds or semi-hardwood cuttings.
