About
An evergreen shrub or small tree, typically growing 2-5 metres tall but capable of reaching 20-24 metres in forest environments, featuring shiny, deep-green, trifoliolate leaves with wavy margins that release a lemony scent when crushed due to dense gland-dots. Small, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers appear from December to March, followed by small, globose, black fruits that ripen from May to July and are favoured by birds.
Where it works in Kilifi
This versatile plant thrives in full sun or semi-shade and is well-suited for coastal gardens, tolerating sandy soils. Its non-aggressive root system makes it ideal as a specimen plant, screening hedge, or for soil rehabilitation, suitable for small gardens or planting near structures; space at least 3 metres from buildings or pools.
Growing notes
White Ironwood exhibits a moderate to fast growth rate, becoming water-wise and drought-tolerant once established, though it benefits from regular watering during its initial years. It is semi-hardy to light frost and can be pruned to maintain shape or size.
