About

Vepris eugeniifolia is an unarmed, profusely branched shrub or small tree, typically reaching 2 to 4.5 metres, though it can grow up to 12 metres tall. It features alternate, unifoliolate leaves that are elliptic to ovate, 3.5–12 x 2–5.5 cm, with acuminate tips, cuneate bases, and raised glands beneath. Small yellowish flowers develop into subglobose, orange, one-seeded drupes of 6–8 mm in diameter.

Where it works in Kilifi

This species thrives in semi-evergreen bushland, often on rocky outcrops, and is found in coastal forest or thicket in Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale Counties. It is well-suited for a Kilifi-coast garden in partial shade to full sun, particularly in drier areas, and can serve as an ornamental or in restoration efforts.

Growing notes

Vepris species are generally slow-growing in the wild, with seedlings taking a decade or more to reach flowering maturity. Once established, this species is known to tolerate dry conditions, indicating moderate water needs.
