About
Vanilla roscheri is a leafless, liana-like climber featuring green succulent stems up to 1 cm in diameter, often with small brownish vestigial leaves at the nodes. A distinctive trait is two shallow channels running along its stems. It produces large, showy, fragrant white flowers up to 15 cm in diameter, frequently flushed with pink and a salmon-pink or yellowish, funnel-shaped lip.
Where it works in Kilifi
This climbing orchid thrives in warm to hot temperatures with high humidity, making it suitable for coastal Kilifi gardens. It requires a support structure, such as a pole or trellis, and prefers its base and roots in shade while the upper parts receive partial shade to full sun to encourage flowering. It is well-suited as an ornamental climber in coastal bush or forest-mimicking environments.
Growing notes
Vanilla roscheri is considered easy to grow and requires a very loose, well-drained medium. It benefits from good air movement and regular misting, with established plants needing to dry out somewhat between waterings. Propagation is straightforward using large cuttings taken before summer growth.
