About
This deciduous to semi-deciduous tree typically grows 2-8 metres tall, often multi-stemmed with a rounded canopy. Subspecies rotundata is distinguished by its more branched flower clusters, more pointed corolla lobes, and leaves that are fully developed during flowering. It bears dull green, broadly oval, velvety hairy leaves and small, greenish-white flowers, followed by edible, round fruits that ripen from glossy green to dull orange-brown or purplish, often displaying a star-shaped calyx scar.
Where it works in Kilifi
Well-suited for Kilifi-coast gardens, thriving in full sun or light dappled shade and well-drained, sandy soils, including coastal dunes. It can be planted as a specimen tree, for shade, or in restoration projects, with a recommended spacing of 4.5 metres apart.
Growing notes
This species has a slow growth rate, typically increasing by 40-50 cm per year. Once established, it is highly drought-tolerant, requiring watering only every 2-3 weeks in arid conditions. Young plants transplant well but need regular watering for the first five weeks after planting.
