About
Vachellia zanzibarica is a thorny shrub or small tree, typically growing up to 3 metres tall but sometimes reaching 6-9 metres. Native to the seasonally dry lowland tropics of East Africa, it often displays a dense, bushy habit. It produces small, yellow flowers and flat, brown, oval-shaped seeds, and is known for forming ant-galls on its branches.

This drought-resistant species is well-suited for Kilifi's coastal gardens and landscapes, thriving in full sun and tolerant of various soil types, including heavy clay and those with impeded drainage or seasonal waterlogging. It can serve as a resilient specimen tree for shade, a dense thorny hedge, or for restoration in challenging conditions like salt-wind exposure.
