About
This medium to tall deciduous tree typically grows 3-25 metres, developing a distinctive wide, flat, or umbrella-shaped crown. Its notable feature is the rough, yellowish-grey bark that peels in papery strips, revealing a pale yellow underbark. It produces small, cream to pale yellow scented flowers in globose heads, followed by shiny brown, flat pods containing large seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for large gardens and landscapes in Kilifi, this tree thrives in full sun and well-drained, even poor or rocky, soils. Its wide, spreading canopy provides dappled shade, making it suitable as a specimen tree, a shade tree, or for street planting due to its non-invasive root system.
Growing notes
A fast-growing species, particularly when young, achieving around 1.5 metres of growth per year. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and requires moderate watering (every 2-3 weeks). Young plants should be protected from frost and fire, as the bark is flammable and wilted leaves contain prussic acid, which can be toxic to livestock.
