About
Uvariodendron gorgonis is an evergreen tree reaching 6–12 metres with a fluted bole and dark brown to grey, smooth bark that may flake. It features elliptic-oblong leaves and cauliflorous, lemon-scented flowers borne on the trunk and older branches, which develop into fleshy fruits. The inner bark emits a spicy aroma when cut.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species is ideal for shaded understory conditions in a Kilifi-coast garden, especially where soils are well-drained, humus-rich, and on limestone or coral rag. It can serve as a specimen tree or for forest restoration in humid areas.
Growing notes
As a lowland rainforest understory tree, Uvariodendron gorgonis requires consistent moisture and high humidity once established. It thrives in shaded environments.
