About
Uvaria leptocladon is a scrambling shrub, native to seasonally dry tropical biomes from Southern Somalia to Northern Tanzania. It features pale, softly hairy leaves beneath and small flowers with petals up to 1.4 cm long. The plant produces round to ovoid fruit monocarps, each up to 2 cm long and containing up to nine seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
This indigenous scrambling shrub thrives in drier forests and bushland, making it suitable for coastal Kilifi gardens. It prefers sunny locations and well-drained soils, ideal for restoration projects or as an informal hedge.

Uvaria leptocladon is adapted to seasonally dry conditions, suggesting it is drought-tolerant once established. It has been studied for its traditional medicinal uses and exhibits anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
