Turraea nilotica is a deciduous shrub or small tree, typically growing up to 10 metres in height. It features elliptic leaves, up to 10 × 16 cm, which are densely velvety hairy, particularly on their undersurface. Greenish-white flowers, which turn yellow with age, appear in dense clusters on young branches before the leaves, followed by a near-spherical, thinly woody capsule fruit.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it suitable for Kilifi-coast gardens. It can be planted as an ornamental shrub or small tree, and may also be considered for restoration efforts in appropriate habitats, particularly in wooded grassland or humid forest margins.
Growing notes
Turraea nilotica is easily propagated by cuttings, though growing from seed can be slow, taking up to two months for germination. It can also be propagated through division of the rootstock.
