About
This elegant, often deciduous tree grows up to 15 metres tall, featuring pale grey or brownish bark and soft-textured, ovate to lanceolate leaves. In spring, it produces a profusion of fragrant, lily-like flowers, pale pistachio-green to creamy-white, which appear with or just before the new leaves. The globe-like woody fruits split into star-shaped lobes, revealing glossy orange or red seeds with a white aril.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for small subtropical and tropical gardens in Kilifi, this tree thrives in full sun and well-drained, compost-enriched soil. It can serve as an ornamental specimen, providing light shade with its loosely branched habit. Its natural habitat includes coastal forests and open woodlands.
Growing notes
It has a moderate growth rate and, once established, requires moderate watering. This hardy species prefers frost-free climates. It is important to note that some parts of the tree are believed to contain toxins.
