About
This annual or perennial herb, sometimes a subshrub, typically grows up to 2 metres tall. It is distinguished by its alternate, rhombic to ovate leaves, often three-lobed with serrated margins. Small yellow flowers develop into spherical burs, about 4-6 mm in diameter, covered with hooked bristles.
Where it works in Kilifi
This adaptable plant thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained loamy soils, making it suitable for Kilifi's warm, humid climate. It can be utilised in restoration projects on disturbed land or as a robust groundcover, although its tendency to spread should be noted.
Growing notes
This fast-growing species requires consistent soil moisture, particularly in warm, humid conditions. It is hardy in tropical environments but care is needed as its bristly fruits readily cling to clothing and animal fur, aiding its spread as a persistent weed. It is not known to be toxic.
