About
This evergreen tree typically reaches 20-30 metres tall with a small, rounded crown and drooping branches. It features smooth, grey bark that exudes creamy-white latex and glossy, dark elliptic leaves with a prominent drip-tip. The tree produces edible, oval, purple-black, fig-like fruits, approximately 2 cm long, embedded within a fleshy receptacle.
Where it works in Kilifi
Suitable for moist areas in a Kilifi-coast garden, such as near seasonal watercourses or in naturally damp spots, as it thrives in riverine and groundwater forests. It serves well as a large shade or specimen tree and is valuable for forest restoration in humid sites.
Growing notes
As an evergreen species native to wet tropical biomes, it likely prefers consistent moisture, especially once established. The wood is reported to be perishable when in contact with soil.
