About
This is a fast-growing, medium-sized to large tree, reaching up to 18 metres in height, though sometimes taller. It has smooth, light grey bark marked with corky lenticels and simple, alternate leaves that are rough to the touch and finely serrated along the margins. Small, inconspicuous greenish flowers develop into tiny, round, glossy black fruits when ripe.
Where it works in Kilifi
An excellent pioneer species, this tree is ideal for quick establishment in new gardens, disturbed areas, or for restoration purposes on the Kilifi coast. It thrives in full sun and can be planted as a specimen or for shade, adapting to a wide range of well-drained soils.
Growing notes
Trema orientalis exhibits a very fast growth rate and possesses an extensive root system, making it notably drought tolerant once established. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil, though it can adapt to various soil types. Regular pruning may be necessary to manage its rapid growth and maintain shape.
