About
This deciduous shrub or small tree, reaching up to 7 metres tall, features leathery, dark green leaves that can be simple or trifoliolate. Its striking flowers lack petals but display numerous white stamens that age to pink, emerging in spring. The distinctive, ridged fruit ripens from green to purple and resembles a small cucumber.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for a Kilifi-coast garden, this species thrives in full sun within dry woodlands, bushland, or riverine areas. It can serve as an ornamental feature, a small shade tree, or for restoration in suitable habitats.
Growing notes
Propagates from fresh seeds, which germinate within 7-10 days in well-drained, moist soil under partial shade. Cuttings are also viable but slower to root. Once established, it is likely drought-tolerant; however, note that the tubers are poisonous.
