About
Yellow Oleander is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to tropical America, typically growing to 5-8 metres tall. It features glossy, linear-lanceolate, dark green leaves and fragrant, funnel-shaped yellow flowers that bloom throughout much of the year in warm climates. Its distinctive four-sided fruits ripen to a deep red-black, encasing highly poisonous seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, well-drained loamy soils, though it can tolerate poorer conditions. It can be planted as an ornamental specimen, in small groups, or used to form hedges for privacy or soil conservation. Due to its significant toxicity, it is not recommended for areas frequented by children or pets.
Growing notes
Yellow Oleander grows at a fast rate and, once established, is drought-tolerant, requiring low to moderate watering. Pruning can be done after flowering or in late winter to maintain its desired shape and encourage abundant blooms. All parts of the plant, especially the seeds and milky sap, are highly poisonous if ingested, so extreme caution is advised.
