This small, deciduous tree typically grows 2.5 to 15 metres tall, featuring pale grey to grey-black, deeply fissured bark. Its small, dark green leaves are clustered on short, spiky branchlets, and it produces starry, cream-white flowers with an unpleasant scent. The distinctive fruit is a winged samara, maturing to a striking purplish-brown or deep red colour.
