About
This large tropical tree can reach up to 35 metres tall, featuring a distinctive tiered, horizontal branch structure when young that flattens into a vase shape with age. Its large, glossy, leathery leaves turn vivid red, yellow, or purplish-red before falling. Inconspicuous greenish-white flowers develop into hard, flattened, almond-like fruits containing an edible kernel.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal as a shade or ornamental tree in Kilifi coast gardens, it thrives in full sun and tolerates saline soils and salt spray, making it excellent for seaside locations. Plant approximately 5-8 metres apart to allow for its spreading canopy. Its vast root system helps bind sandy soils, contributing to dune fixation and soil conservation.
Growing notes
This species is medium to fast-growing and, once established, is drought tolerant, though it benefits from regular watering, especially during dry periods. It prefers warm tropical climates and dislikes temperatures below 13°C. The tree is deciduous, shedding large leaves twice a year, which turn vibrant red before falling.
