About
Tectona grandis is a large, deciduous tropical hardwood tree, typically growing up to 40 metres tall. It features large, papery leaves often hairy on the lower surface, and produces small, fragrant white flowers in dense clusters. Valued for its highly durable and water-resistant timber, which emits a distinctive leather-like smell when freshly cut.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species thrives in full sun and prefers deep, well-drained, fertile soils common along the Kilifi coast. Ideal as a large shade tree or specimen, it requires ample space in a garden setting.
Growing notes
A fast-growing tree, it requires average watering to maintain moist but not waterlogged soil, becoming drought-tolerant once established. Young plants show sensitivity to salinity stress, a consideration for irrigation in coastal environments.
