About

Long-lived evergreen tree with feathery foliage and tart edible pods that have been a staple of East African coastal cooking and trade for centuries.

Where it works in Kilifi

Excellent shade and amenity tree for homesteads, schools and roadsides. Tolerates the coastal climate, sandy soils and salt-laden winds.

Growing notes

Slow to moderate growth, but extremely long-lived (centuries). Drought-tolerant once established. Self-fertile; begins producing pods at around 6–10 years from seed. Pruning rarely needed.
