About
Jewels of Opar is a shrubby succulent or herbaceous perennial, growing up to 1.2 metres tall from a tuberous rootstock. It features slender stems with green, slightly fleshy, obovate leaves. Delicate pink or red flowers bloom in terminal panicles, followed by attractive, spherical, yellow or pinkish-yellow seed capsules containing glossy black seeds. The leaves are edible and used in traditional medicine.
Where it works in Kilifi
This plant thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade and prefers hot climates. It is an excellent choice for rock gardens, general garden use, or container planting, requiring well-drained soil. Space individual plants approximately 30-45 cm apart for mass planting or border edging.
Growing notes
Once established, this species is drought tolerant but benefits from regular watering during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. It is not frost-tolerant and will perennialize in warm climates. It is generally low maintenance and can reseed readily.
