About
Polynesian arrowroot is a perennial herb growing to about 1 metre tall, characterised by large, deeply lobed leaves that can reach up to 120 cm wide. It produces unique greenish-purple flowers on tall stalks, surrounded by striking whisker-like bracts. The plant forms starchy, potato-like tubers underground, which were historically prepared as a significant food source after processing to remove their natural bitterness.
Where it works in Kilifi
This plant thrives in coastal conditions, making it suitable for Kilifi-coast gardens. It prefers semi-shade to full sun and grows well in fertile, humus-rich, well-draining sandy soils, typically found at low elevations near the sea. It can be planted as a distinctive specimen or integrated into a tropical border.

Polynesian arrowroot is a fast-growing perennial that requires consistent moisture during its active growth phase.
