About

Synsepalum msolo is an evergreen tree, typically growing 10-15 metres tall but capable of reaching 50 metres, with a dense, spreading canopy. Its bark is smooth to scaly, pale grey to brown, often longitudinally fissured, exuding white or pinkish latex when cut. The tree produces subglobose, fleshy, and sweet yellow berries, approximately 3 cm long, which are consumed raw or processed into juice. The wood is also valued and used for making canoes, paddles, and spoons.

Where it works in Kilifi

This large tree thrives in Kilifi's warm, humid lowland conditions, preferring full sun to light shade. It is an excellent choice for a specimen tree, providing significant shade, or for inclusion in forest restoration projects.

Growing notes

Synsepalum msolo exhibits a slow growth rate. While tolerant of a wide rainfall range, it prefers consistent moisture conditions, especially during establishment, reflecting its natural lowland rainforest habitat. No specific hazards are known for this species.
