About
Synsepalum kaessneri is a tree native to Kenya, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe, typically found in moist evergreen and dry semi-deciduous forests at altitudes between 300 and 1100 metres. It is distinguished by its oblanceolate leaves with a short acuminate and broad rounded tip, measuring between 28-52 mm wide and 98 mm or more in length. The tree flowers in September and March, with fruits developing in January and May.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species is well-suited for coastal Kilifi gardens and landscapes as a shade or restoration tree, thriving in tropical lowland conditions with adequate moisture. It prefers partial shade and acidic, well-drained soil.
Growing notes
Synsepalum kaessneri requires consistent moisture and acidic soil to flourish, with a preference for humus-rich, well-drained conditions. It is intolerant of frost, which is not an issue in Kilifi, and thrives in warm temperatures and high humidity.
