About
This evergreen tree typically grows 3–25 metres tall with a dense, wide-spreading crown of drooping branches and a fluted bole that exudes milky latex when cut. Its spirally arranged, leathery leaves are obovate to oblanceolate, up to 25 cm long, glossy green above, and paler with silvery hairs and distinct parallel veins below. It produces small, sweetly scented, greenish to creamy-white flowers and edible, ellipsoid, yellow-orange berries containing an acid-sweet, milky pulp.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens, this species thrives in full sun to partial shade, especially in areas with consistently moist, humus-rich, well-drained sandy loams. It is excellent for riparian restoration, planted near water bodies, or as a shade or ornamental specimen in larger gardens.
Growing notes
This species prefers moist conditions once established, thriving in high rainfall areas and well-drained, humus-rich soils. Propagate from seed, pre-soaking or scarifying them for optimal germination, and ensure consistent watering, particularly during establishment.
