About
Stylochaeton salaamicus is a perennial herbaceous plant native to East Tropical Africa, including Tanzania and Kenya. It grows from an underground rhizome, producing 1-6 radical, erect, hastate leaves in a rosette arrangement, typically reaching 5-40 cm in height. Its inflorescences usually develop at or below soil level, and the plant possesses thickened, fleshy roots, allowing it to tolerate prolonged dry periods.
Where it works in Kilifi
Given its native range in East Tropical Africa's seasonally dry tropical biome, Stylochaeton salaamicus is well-suited for a Kilifi-coast garden. It thrives in well-drained, sandy or sandy-clay soils, ideally in partial shade, making it suitable for underplanting or restoration in appropriate microclimates.
Growing notes
This species exhibits seasonal dormancy, with leaves emerging after rains, indicating low water needs once established. Propagation is primarily achieved through rhizome division. Flowering is infrequent and may occur during the dry season.
