About
This semi-deciduous, small to medium-sized tree grows up to 12 metres tall with a dense, sometimes drooping crown. It features small, leathery, glossy green leaves, and scented, creamy-white flowers that often appear before the foliage. The small, globose fruits ripen from orange to red, but the bark and green fruits are known to be poisonous.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for Kilifi-coast gardens, this species thrives in full sun to partial shade and well-drained, sandy soils. It is well-suited for specimen planting, providing attractive form and foliage, and is also valuable for restoration in coastal thickets and dry landscapes.
Growing notes
This drought-resistant tree prefers evenly moist soil but can tolerate moderate dry periods once established. Due to the presence of poisonous alkaloids in its roots, stems, and leaves, caution is advised, and it should be planted in areas inaccessible to children and pets.
