This medium-sized, often multi-stemmed tree is recognised by its deeply fissured, dark grey bark and glossy, dark green leaves that often turn yellow before falling. It produces small, fragrant greenish-yellow flowers followed by edible, round yellow fruits with sweet pulp.

Thrives in full sun to light shade and well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for a garden specimen or providing dappled shade. Its moderate size also suits mixed indigenous plantings or restoration areas in Kilifi.
