About
Streblus usambarensis is a dioecious shrub or small evergreen tree, typically growing up to 5 metres tall, with smooth, mottled grey-brown bark that exudes a cloudy latex. Its glossy dark green leaves are elliptic to obovate, 10-15 cm long, featuring a distinct drip-tip and serrated margins in the upper two-thirds. This species produces fleshy, subglobose, two-lobed fruits, approximately 10 mm in diameter, which ripen from pale whitish green to black.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species naturally occurs in low-altitude sand forests and along stream edges, indicating its suitability for a Kilifi-coast garden, particularly in areas with sandy soils. It can serve as an understorey shrub or small tree, ideal for providing shade or contributing to forest restoration within appropriate light conditions.

As a tropical forest species, Streblus usambarensis thrives in warm, humid conditions with adequate moisture once established, and can be propagated from cuttings. The presence of cloudy latex in the bark is a notable characteristic.
