About

Sterculia schliebenii is a deciduous tree growing 4–16 metres tall, featuring rough grey or brown bark that exudes a pink, watery slash when cut. Its obovate leaves measure 8–18 cm long. Campanulate flowers, purple-tomentose and arranged in panicles, emerge before the leaves. It is endemic to the coastal regions of East Africa, including southeastern Kenya, eastern Tanzania, and northern Mozambique, thriving in remnants of undisturbed coastal rainforest.

Where it works in Kilifi

This species is ideal for restoration projects in lowland coastal forest areas of Kilifi, especially on well-drained, pebbly sandy soils. It thrives in remnants of primary coastal evergreen and semi-deciduous forest scraps, suggesting a preference for partial shade or understory conditions within a forest setting. It can serve as a valuable component in recreating its natural habitat.
