About
A large deciduous tree, the Java olive typically grows 30-40 metres tall with a straight trunk and smooth, grey bark. Its whorled branches spread horizontally, bearing palmately compound leaves with 7-9 leaflets clustered at the branchlet ends. It produces foul-smelling, green or dull purple unisexual flowers, followed by striking scarlet, woody follicles containing 10-15 slate-coloured to black seeds.
Where it works in Kilifi
This species is well-suited as a large specimen or shade tree in open, sunny areas of a Kilifi-coast garden or landscape. It thrives in hot tropical climates with well-drained soil and requires ample space due to its mature size and spreading canopy.
Growing notes
Java olive is a relatively fast-growing tree in its early stages and is easily propagated from seed or cuttings. It is a light demander, requiring full sun, and once established, it is drought tolerant, needing infrequent watering. Raw seeds are toxic to pets and humans and should be roasted before consumption.
