About
This evergreen perennial grows as an herbaceous shrub, often woody at the base, reaching 0.5 to 2 metres in height. It features opposite, ovate to elliptic leaves with toothed margins. Distinctive purplish-blue flowers, sometimes white or mauve with a light throat, are arranged on long terminal spikes up to 50 cm, opening continuously for months and attracting pollinators. Where it works in Kilifi
This plant is well-suited for pollinator gardens, mixed borders, or as a hedge in coastal Kilifi landscapes. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and is adaptable to well-drained soils, including sandy or rocky substrates. [3, 6, 7, 11, 14]
Growing notes
A fast-growing species, it prefers even moisture but becomes quite drought-tolerant once established. It is known to easily escape cultivation and can become locally weedy or invasive in non-native regions, including parts of tropical Africa. [2, 3, 7, 11] Regular pruning and removal of spent flowers are recommended to manage its size and prevent excessive self-seeding. [6, 15]
