About
This sprawling herbaceous perennial or subshrub typically reaches up to 1 metre in height, with green to purple, often square stems that may become woody at the base. Its dark green leaves are oppositely arranged, ovate, and have serrated margins. Small, vibrant lilac, lavender, blue, or purple flowers bloom on long, slender terminal spikes, opening one to three at a time and lasting for a single day.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for sunny to lightly shaded areas along the Kilifi coast, thriving in a range of well-drained soils, including sandy types. It serves well as a groundcover, in mass plantings, or as an informal hedge, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. This species is adaptable to drought conditions once established and shows moderate tolerance to salty wind and salt spray.
Growing notes
This plant exhibits a fast growth rate and prefers consistent moisture during establishment, becoming drought-tolerant once mature. Regular pruning is recommended to maintain its shape and promote continuous flowering, with fertilisation twice yearly enhancing growth and foliage colour. Note that it is reported as an invasive species in Kenya and Tanzania and can spread by self-seeding.
