About
The Nandi Flame is a fast-growing, evergreen tree that typically reaches 10-25 metres in height with a rounded, spreading crown. Its large, opposite, pinnately compound leaves are densely hairy, particularly underneath, and consist of 9-19 ovate to elliptic leaflets. This species is renowned for its striking orange-red, cup-shaped flowers with crinkled margins, which appear in terminal clusters year-round, often peaking in dry seasons. The furry, kidney-shaped buds contain a watery liquid, and flowers develop into woody, canoe-shaped capsules that release numerous flat, winged seeds upon splitting.
Where it works in Kilifi
This ornamental tree thrives in full sun and prefers fertile, deep, well-drained loamy soils, though it tolerates a range of soil types and pH. It is ideal as a specimen or shade tree in large, open landscapes, but due to its brittle wood, sheltered locations are recommended, particularly along the windy Kilifi coast.
Growing notes
A fast-growing species, the Nandi Flame requires regular watering until established, after which it becomes drought-resistant. It is sensitive to frost, with foliage dying around -2°C, though roots may survive lower temperatures. Gardeners should note that the tree is considered invasive in many tropical regions due to its rapid growth and prolific seed production.
