This evergreen tree can grow up to 20 metres tall, featuring grey-brown flaking bark. Its compound leaves have 7-13 oblong-elliptic, hairless leaflets, often with an asymmetrical base. Small, yellowish-pink flowers are borne in long, pendent panicles on older wood, developing into edible, fleshy, bright yellow-orange, oval drupes.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal Kilifi gardens and landscapes, especially in areas with high groundwater or near riverine settings, on sandy or loamy soils. It serves well as a specimen tree or for providing shade in areas mimicking its natural habitat in coastal forests.
Growing notes
For fruit production, both male and female plants are required as this species is dioecious. Seeds lose viability quickly and should be planted promptly, as they are not suitable for storage.
