About
This evergreen tree typically grows 3-20 metres tall, sometimes reaching 40 metres, featuring a light grey, fissured bark and conical aerial roots (pneumatophores) for gas exchange. Its leaves are thick, glossy, elliptical, and pale to dark green, while fragrant white flowers with long stamens bloom at night. The tree produces round, green, berry-like fruits containing buoyant seeds, which are dispersed by water.
Where it works in Kilifi
Ideal for coastal restoration and specialised landscapes directly exposed to tidal saline water along the Kilifi coast, particularly in sheltered sandy or muddy foreshores. It serves as a pioneer species for stabilising shorelines and establishing mangrove ecosystems.
Growing notes
This mangrove requires full sun exposure and consistent inundation by saltwater, as it is intolerant of freshwater. It is a moderate-difficulty species to grow, adapting best to conditions mimicking its natural intertidal habitat. Once established, it is tolerant of strong, salt-laden winds and prefers warm temperatures.
